Relatively easy to install, low cost, and comes in decorator designs and colors: those are the advantages that sheet vinyl has over other flooring materials. It probably won’t fool anyone into thinking it’s really stone, ceramic, or wood flooring, but it gives a good impersonation and it leaves some money for other things -- like food.
Sheet vinyl can be difficult to install in small rooms where there are cabinets and fixtures to work around, like bathrooms and some kitchens. Another disadvantage is that the flooring is so thin that it will “telegraph” any bumps, debris, nail heads, or other matter it is installed over. That means the subfloor must be quite smooth before installing sheet vinyl flooring. If not, an underlayment must be installed to smooth it out.
