Carpet is heavy. A room of carpeting can weight more than 100 pounds. The best way to remove carpet is to cut it into manageable sizes so it can be rolled up and lifted by one person. Also break wood, sheet vinyl, and other old flooring into manageable sizes so they can be transported to the dump.
Flooring materials can be difficult to get rid of, especially in areas where landfills are already full. Call your local solid waste management center to find out if the materials can be recycled or they must become land fill. Alternately, carpeting can be used as a landscape fabric, laid down to keep weeds from growing then covered in mulch or gravel.
